Why the global bulk wine trade matters more than ever<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Wine trade in bulk represents more than one-third of total exports by volume<\/strong>, while accounting for only 7% of total revenues. Yet in a world of rising competition and economic uncertainty, this segment of the market is outperforming most other wine categories.<\/p>\n

What explains this stronger performance? Who are the key players in the sector? And above all, why has the bulk wine trade become more relevant than ever?<\/p>\n

In the 12 months up to June 2025, global shipments of wine in containers exceeding 10 litres (\u201cbulk wine\u201d) reached 33 million hectolitres<\/strong>, sold at an average price of \u20ac79 per hectolitre, and generating revenues of \u20ac2.6 billion.<\/p>\n

Despite periodic fluctuations, driven by international consumer trends as well as differences on wine availability among producers, recent data show a volume decline of 2.3%, offset by a 5.7% increase in unit prices, resulting in a 3.3% overall growth in value<\/strong>. These figures outperform most other categories of world wine trade in revenue, while ranking second only to sparkling wines by volume.<\/p>\n

Behind these global figures lie two major factors. On the one hand, bulk wine serves as a crucial input for many wine-producing countries that use imported bulk to complement domestic production. This practice supports local elaboration (for example, base wines for sparkling production in Germany), strengthens domestic distribution (as seen in France and Italy, which import significant volumes from Spain), and bolsters exports.<\/p>\n

Major producers such as France, Italy, Germany, and Portugal<\/strong> often record higher sales than their own production levels, meaning they must import wine to sustain their strong commercial activity. And they do it at relatively low prices.<\/p>\n

\u201cBulk trade facilitates the supply of quality wines to distant markets.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

At the same time, bulk trade facilitates the supply of quality wines to distant markets where bottling operations are efficient and closer to key distribution networks. This model allows producers to reduce shipping costs without compromising quality, as seen in exports from New Zealand and Australia to the United Kingdom and the United States, as well as Chile\u2019s exports to North America and Europe. Unlike the first group, these wines are shipped ready for immediate bottling, requiring no further processing, and are generally sold at higher unit prices.<\/p>\n

In both cases, bulk wine trade continues to grow thanks to its economic efficiency and environmental advantages<\/strong>. Transporting wine in large containers is particularly cost-effective over long distances, and more sustainable given the reduced weight and packaging compared to bottled shipments. Additionally, producers can gain a commercial edge by entering bottling agreements at destination markets with major distribution companies.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s crucial to understand the vital role the bulk wine trade plays in sustaining<\/strong> a sound and profitable global wine industry as a whole. It provides an efficient and environmentally responsible means of transporting a wide variety of wines. Of course, the quality of the product will always depend not on how it is shipped, but on the wine itself.<\/p>\n
